Taking Flight- City of Cockburn Metal Sculpture

Erected at the junction of Semple court and North lake road stand three four metre tall feathers which represent one of Western Australia's most indangered species of birds, the three black cockatoo species. Due to habitat loss and urbanisation, the birds have been push out of their native environment leaving them with small pockets of vegitation to roost. The cortan steel sculpture showcases a lazer cut of the birds taking flight. The positive silhouettes of the birds suggest positive outlook of the species population while the negative space of the birds represents those that have been lost. As an artist, I hope to encourage awareness that life itself can be so fragile when not taken care of.
